Ferhat Sen (b.1984, Turkey) is an artist, designer, researcher and writer residing in Helsinki. He has curated exhibitions, produced and collaborated on projects ranging from interactive and immersive environments to digital and traditional photography and video. Ferhat Sen is currently teaching and pursuing a doctoral degree in New Media at Media Lab Helsinki, Finland. His research area is digital cultural heritage.

Design of Sensor-based Instruments: Historical Orchestra Project

Historical Orchestra is an interactive installation based on a 16th century Turkish illustrated manuscript. The installation utilizes three tangible musical interfaces and gives real-time visual narrative feedback. The sensor-based musical interfaces enable three users to play three instruments simultaneously. The selected illustration is interactively animated according to the actions of the user with the instruments. The digital instruments in the installation are inspired by a string instrument, oud, a wind instrument, ney and a percussive instrument, tambourine. This lecture will be presenting briefly about the context of the project, the design phase and sensor structure of the instruments, mapping strategies and sound generation.

Introduction to Embodied Interaction Possibilities with MS Kinect

The emerging technologies are creating new possibilities and interaction modalities for interactive media projects. Microsoft Kinect, a 3D depth sensing and body tracking device, is a recent easy-to-use off-the-shelf equipment that started to be widely used in interactive media art works. After a brief techological description of Kinect, this lecture will present interaction possibilities of MS Kinect with reference to open source opportunities. Example videos and a short demonstration will also be presented.

Heikki Salo has worked with computer art since 1987. While working as a IT consultant and lecturer Salo has also worked with electronic art, focusing on mosaic technique, computational colour scales and swarm animations. Body Motion / Vartaloliike is an interactive installation for a projector, computer and a 3D motion sensor. The installation is about human interaction: The perception of colors is individual and personal. Body Motion / Vartaloliike sets up a dialogue (multilogue?) between these individual colour experiences. Salo presents his installation and the design process.

Goodiepal is the enfant terrible of electronic culture. Born in the Faroe Islands, Goodiepal (real name Parl Kristian Bjørn Vester) is an eccentric artist as well as a teacher of electronic culture, whose controversial views on computer and media art and modern music have made him an icon. On behalf of his controversial views Goodiepal has declared intellectual war against the stupidity in modern computer music and media art. His controversial views have gotten him fired from his day job at the the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus as well as getting him wanted by the police.

Last year Goodiepal had to cancel his appearance in Tampere because he was forbidden to leave the country, due to aftermath of an art project of his.This year mr Vester will talk about his “war” and, possibly, a range of other interesting subjects. Highly recommended by manSEDANse!

Goodiepal on elektronisen kulttuurin todellinen enfant terrible. Färsaarilta lähtöisin oleva Goodiepal (oikealta nimeltään Parl Kristian Bjørn Vester) on eksentrinen taiteilija ja elektronisen taiteen opettaja, jonka vimmaiset näkemykset tietokoneavusteisesta mediataiteesta ja modernista musiikista ovat toisaalta vieneet hänet luennoimaan ympäri maailmaa ja toisaalta aiheuttaneet potkut Tanskan kuninkaallisen musiikkiakatemian opettajan paikalta. Hiljattain Goodiepal joutui myös etsintäkuulutetuksi taiteellisten tempaustensa vuoksi. Goodiepal onkin julistanut “herrasmiehen intellektuaalisen sodan modernin tietokonemusiikin ja mediataiteen typeryyttä vastaan”.

Goodiepal joutui perumaan osallistumisensa viime vuoden festivaaleille juuri ennen tapahtumaa projektinsa aiheuttaneen maastapoistumiskiellon takia. Vuoden 2011 festivaaleilla herra kertoo “sodastaan” sekä todennäköisesti paljon muuta. manSEDANse suosittelee täysin rinnoin!

Jacob Sikker Remin: Cheap, Fat and Open

Danish self taught media artist, instrument builder and musician Jacob Sikker Remin is the creator of Cheap, Fat and Open - an open source synthesiser. Cheap, Fat and Open is built using consumer goods and devices and has, among other things, a one-and-a-half-octave keyboard and a sequencer. Use the miniplug on the metal keyboard to play!

Cheap, Fat and Open on rakennettu erilaisista kulutustavaroista ja -laitteista. Soittimessa on mm. puolentoista oktaavin koskettimisto ja sekvensseri. Syntetisaattoria soitetaan painamalla miniplugia metallikoskettimilla!

Media museum Rupriikki has executed an interactive sound table to Koukkuniemi elderly home, Äänimuseo. The table works with RFID-technology, so that people living in the elderly home can gather around the table to listen and reminiscence. The user can for instance play around with 1950’s and 1960’s soundscapes and reminiscence how it sounds when the sauna stove hisses or when the bells of Frenckell chime.

A lot of thought was put to all the special needs the elderly have, so the technology has been hidden inside the table, so an interface that is based on the user moving wooden objects around on the table is all the user experiences. This interface is based on RFID-technology. As the user moves the actual objects, each representing a different sound, for example a miniature train, the system plays the sound attached to it.

Mediamuseo Rupriikin Koukkuniemen vanhainkotiin toteuttama vuorovaikutteinen äänipöytä “Äänimuseo” on RFID-tekniikalla toteutettu pöytä, jonka ympärille asukkaat voivat kerääntyä kuuntelemaan ja muistelemaan. Käyttäjä voi tutustua esimerkiksi vanhoihin 1950- ja 1960-luvun äänimaisemiin ja muistella kuinka kiuas sihahtaa tai Frenckellin kellot lyövät.

Ääniä soittavan pöydän suunnittelussa on huomioitu Koukkuniemen asukkaiden erityistarpeet, joten sen tekniikka on piilotettu pöydän sisään. Suunnittelussa on kehitetty esineiden siirtelyyn perustuva käyttöliittymä, joka perustuu RFID-teknologiaan. Käyttäjän siirrellessä eri ääniä edustavia fyysisiä esineitä, esimerkiksi junaa esittävää pienoismallia, soittaa järjestelmä esineeseen liitetyn äänen.

Heikki Salo on tehnyt tietokonetaidetta vuodesta 1987 lähtien. Salon interaktiivinen romaani Hyperromaani CODEX B julkaistiin vuonna 1991. Myöhemmin tietotekniikan konsulttina ja luennoitsijana toiminut Salo on tehnyt myös jatkuvasti aktiivisesti töitä elektronisen taiteen parissa, keskittyen muun muassa mosaiikkitekniikoiden, laskennallisten värimallien ja parvianimaatioiden kehittelyyn. Body Motion / Vartaloliike on vuorovaikutteinen teos projektorille, tietokoneelle ja 3D liiketunnistimelle. Teoksen merkitys syntyy ihmisten keskinäisestä vuorovaikutuksesta: Värien havaitseminen on yksilöllistä ja Body Motion / Vartaloliike -teoksen tarkoitus on mahdollistaa vuoropuhelu näiden henkilökohtaisten värimaailmojen kesken.
